Agenda New Hampshire has an abundance of naturally occurring arsenic in its groundwater, which serves as drinking water for the vast majority of the State’s population. Recently, New Hampshire and, indeed, much of the rest of country has been faced with another problem regarding water quality: the introduction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) such as perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The presence of these chemicals in groundwater presents challenges to both water and wastewater plant managers. GSRWA is pleased to offer a training course covering issues related to PFAS and arsenic in drinking water and wastewater. This six-hour course will cover sources, chemical properties, and toxicological impacts for both arsenic and the general class of PFAS with specific focus on PFOS and PFOA. Federal and State regulations regarding these substances will precede an examination of how source water may be better selected to avoid the need for treatment. The course will provide an overview of treatment technologies available to meet applicable PFAS and arsenic standards for drinking water as well as for wastewater discharge criteria in compliance with National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit requirements. Potential funding sources for technology upgrades will be discussed.
