Agenda Biological organisms, including bacteria are the most common contamination incident water operators will encounter. Learn how Total Coliform works as the canary in your “coal mine”. Attendees will be briefed on how to conduct proper sampling procedures, what happens to the sample bottle once it leaves the operator’s hands, and how samples are analyzed in the lab. Even with best practices, bacteria contamination can still happen. A NHDES representative will present on how to navigate through a positive bacteria result including: a review of the Revised Total Coliform Rule (rTCR), a brief rundown of the NHDES OneStop, what to do after you learn of the positive result, what triggers a Level 1 or Level 2 Assessment, how to conduct an assessment, how to avoid a Level 2 Assessment, how to remain in compliance or return to compliance, and how to return to standard monitoring if you find yourself with an increased sampling schedule. Lastly, a veteran water operator will present how to most effectively chlorinate a well, conduct a Level 2 Assessment from a field staff perspective, including the most frequent cause(s) of bacterial hits. He will also discuss what to do if all disinfection attempts fail, and well and tank protection strategies. Case studies will be presented of Level 2's, findings and successes.
